Chapter 18

Lily lay in her bed, with several pillows propping up her injured ankle. Brandon sat on the bed beside her, using a wet washcloth and warm soapy water to clean all of her cuts and scrapes.

“Brandon, I don’t know why I can’t just take a shower.” It wasn’t that she didn’t like him being close, but this was just a bit too much fuss for her to handle.

“You just fell down a mountainside. You have a goose egg on your head, countless scrapes and bruises, and a sprained ankle. You could have been killed. Why don’t you just rest for a while?”

“Because I’m no good at resting. I don’t like being propped up and pampered like this. You’ve cleaned all my wounds, iced my ankle, changed my clothes, and I think you were about to brush my hair. It’s just too much. I’m not an invalid.” He flinched a little at her remark and she realized that she’d hurt him. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it hard.

“I’m sorry, that came out wrong. You rode out into the woods and pulled me out of a real bind. And I appreciate it. If not for you I would’ve probably been out there howlin’ with the coyotes tonight. I’m just not the kind of girl who takes to being coddled real well.”

“I just want to make sure you’re okay. Sorry if I went a little overboard.” He smiled as he said it. And then Lily was completely distracted because a heavenly scent was wafting in from the kitchen. She sniffed deeply and closed her eyes.

“What is that wonderful smell?”

“Oh, I threw some cinnamon rolls in the oven. I thought they might taste pretty good with that fresh coffee that’s brewing. But if you’d rather hobble downstairs and fend for yourself, I totally understand. I mean, I wouldn’t want you to feel coddled or anything.” He turned and headed for the door.

Lily chucked a pillow at his head. “Brandon McAllister, you bring me back a cinnamon roll or I will hop down those stairs just to kick your ass.”

He turned and smiled. “As you wish.” It was a line from one of their favorite childhood movies, and she loved that he said it to her now. He took a little bow before exiting the room.

After a minute, he was walking back through the door with a plate full of cinnamon buns and two steaming mugs of coffee.

“Honestly, I was shocked, you even had these things kicking around. Seems like you’d usually make that kind of stuff from scratch.”

“Yeah, I usually do. I bought these a lot over the last few months because they were one of the few things that dad felt like eating in the morning. I never had enough time to fix the real thing before work. His appetite was so poor that I would have fed him just about anything. Should’ve known something was wrong.” Her gaze dropped to the floor. Brandon tilted her chin up gently until she was looking him in the eye.
